Characteristics of the Adult ESL Learner

No two learners will have identical immigration experiences, challenges, or goals for learning English. However, there are traits or situations that are common to many adult ESL learners.

ESL Learners:

  • have a wide range of life experiences
  • undergo stress in their new community
  • are highly motivated, but may be apprehensive about learning English
  • learn best when the information is linked to something they already know
  • want practical lessons that are relevant to their own goals and needs
  • like to learn things they will use immediately
  • may have uneven learning; they may have "good" and "bad" days learning English
  • may have many outside responsibilities (family, home, job)

As you watch the videos, be sure to jot down details that characterize people as ESL learners.
