Being a Tutor: What's it Like?

For a firsthand account of what it’s like to be an ESLSAP tutor and to meet typical learners, click on the following videos. While you watch the videos, make a list of the activities and responsibilities that tutors and learners discuss.

What is most rewarding about being a tutor is seeing the delight in the learner’s eyes when he/she begins to communicate meaningfully…at last we understand each other!

Keep in mind that…

• Learners have busy, full lives, so they may not have much time to practise English or do homework.

• The tutoring session may be the only time during the week when the learner hears or has a chance
   to speak English.

• Learning a new language takes time and a lot of repetition.

• It is very stressful and tiring adjusting to a new language, culture and community.
