We all view the world through our cultural filters of values, traditions, perceptions, and attitudes. Learners need to feel that their culture is valued, and they may want to hold on strongly to what they consider essential to their identity. As they adjust to Canadian life, they will choose what to keep and what to change in their way of living. You will find yourself a fellow cultural explorer as you reflect on the ways things are done in Canada. When you interpret Canadian culture for the learner, be sure to discuss and compare cultures in the spirit of mutual respect and exchange.
