Disclosure of Personal Information

The disclosure of school district employee personal information is also governed by FOIPPA. Read the example below:

A vice-principal receives an email from a teacher saying that he will not be at school on Tuesday because of a medical appointment. The email contains details about the medical condition that warranted the appointment. The vice-principal forwards the e-mail to the school secretary who keeps track of absences.

What do you think? Did the vice-principal improperly disclose information?

School district employees are expected to collect, secure, and retain appropriate student and personnel records in a manner that respects the privacy of employees, students, and students’ families.
