FOIPPA set out standards for public bodies, including school districts, for the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information.

 

Collection of Personal Information

 

In accordance with FOIPPA:

  • School districts have the legal authority to collect personal information that relates directly and is necessary for operating programs or activities in schools.
  • Personal information about a student should be collected directly from that student (or parent/guardian).

  • Collection notices must be provided when collecting information directly from an individual.
  • When a school or a school district collects personal information about students or families, parents/guardians should be informed of the purpose for which the information is being collected.
