Use of Personal Information

FOIPPA permits the use of personal information only for purposes for which the information was collected, or a purpose consistent for the reason it was collected. If consent is needed to use or disclose information about a student, it must be done in the prescribed manner, which is set out in FOIPPA. If it is not done in this way, consent is not recognized under the Act.

For example, a student’s personal information could be used to:

  • develop a personalized educational program
  • consult with Special Education teachers or guidance counsellors
  • track academic progress
  • contact parents or guardians
  • access information for health or safety concerns

If student personal information is intended to be used in newsletter publications, website postings, honor roll lists, or yearbooks, students and/or parents must authorize the disclosure of personal information for such purposes.
