Activity: Adjusting to a New Culture

Think about when you moved to this area. If you have lived in your community for a long time, think about a time when you moved to a different community. What was it like? What was hardest to adjust to? What would you have liked help with? Did anyone help you with your adjustment to the new surroundings? Who were they, and how did they help?

Now imagine you are in a foreign country. You don’t know the language, you can’t read signs, the money is different, and you struggle to communicate with everyone. How do you feel?

Think about what you could do to help your learner adjust to life in Canada. What aspects of culture could you help your learner understand? Make notes so that you can discuss this in the tutor training session with the program coordinator.
