Mod 3: Culture > Summary

Working with her I realized how difficult it would be to not be able to communicate with others in your community. She could not read the labels on products, so was not sure of what she was purchasing. She could not communicate with the doctor when her child was ill. She could not do banking, speak on the phone, or even communicate with her child’s teacher to know if the child was doing well in school. As her abilities to communicate in English grew, her self-confidence grew, and the world around her once again was opened to her. Seeing her now, at work in the community, volunteering, and contributing so much, I have been abundantly rewarded for the time I spent helping her.

In this module you learned the many aspects of culture and the reasons adapting to a new culture can be difficult. You are also now aware of what culture shock is, the stages of adjustment that new immigrants experience, and how you can help your learner through the challenging transition.
