Module 1: The Principles of Early Learning

Children and Early Learning

Children are strong, capable in their uniqueness, and full of potential.

This principle is a key concept in the Early Learning Framework. It means every child is

  • A gift
  • Strong and capable
  • Unique and full of potential

This concept also supports the ideas that children

  • Live and grow in complex ways, within a web of people, and all-world relations
  • Learn in a non-linear, collective, complex way from the time they are born

Your image of children reflects your beliefs and ideas about children. It affects how you interact with children, and the choices you make in your professional practice.

It helps you to think about what is possible, and what is desirable, for people at the individual, social, and global level.

Reflective Questions

Consider your image of childhood and children. How does that image affect your choices in your teaching? In your early care and learning setting or school?
