Module 1: The Principles of Early Learning

Holistic Learning

Learning is holistic.

What is a holistic approach?

  • People learn in a holistic way with their minds, bodies, and spirits
  • They learn in relationships with others and with the environment
  • A holistic approach recognizes that all areas of learning are closely intertwined, and they occur at the same time
  • Learning does not occur in a predictable, straightforward way. It moves in unexpected and surprising directions

It is important to recognize that learning may be approached in many ways.

Children gain knowledge as they create and test theories, explore the world, and express ideas.

Children with diverse abilities and needs may use different ways to construct knowledge, test theories, explore and express ideas.
