Module 1: The Principles of Early Learning
Truth and Reconciliation
What did the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC, 2015a) report say?
Federal, provincial, territorial, and Indigenous governments should develop culturally appropriate early childhood education programs for Indigenous children.
Indigenous families and communities have the right to retain and recover shared responsibility for their children.
It is important for educators to
- Learn about the systemic marginalization and forced assimilation of Indigenous peoples
- Educate others about Indigenous peoples’ experiences
- Understand that we, Canadians and others, are obligated to make amends for the damage done, and being done, to Indigenous communities
- Understand that reconciliation looks different from community to community
- Be mindful that each Nation and community will have different perspectives
