There are 203 First Nations across eight regions that are represented by the Assembly of First Nations of B.C.
There is enormous diversity of language and culture in these nations. In B.C., there are around 34 First Nations languages in seven language families. They represent about 60% of Canada’s First Nations languages. Almost all these languages are in danger of disappearing. However, many are being restored. First Nations people have faced economic hardship and poverty. This has been due to the impacts of colonization.
First Nations children and families have inherent rights as affirmed by the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People. This includes the right to establish and control their education systems. Recognizing First Nations rights leads to reconciliation, where First Nations’ own legal and social systems may again come to enrich and sustain them.
