Module 1: The Principles of Early Learning

Inuit

The Inuit population

  • Are the smallest Indigenous group in B.C.
  • Make up about 0.6% of the Indigenous population in B.C.
  • Are among Canada's youngest citizens, with a median age of 23

About 60% of Inuit can speak in Inuktitut (the Inuit language). Inuit people harvest traditional foods to feed their families and communities. These include seal, narwhal, and caribou.

However, too many Inuit are struggling with violence and trauma.

Why is this happening?

When Canada colonized Inuit Nunangat (Inuit homeland)

  • The federal government created institutions and systems that weakened Inuit society
  • The Inuit were no longer able to be self-reliant

The 2011 National Strategy on Inuit Education called for a new education system that is

  • Bilingual
  • Delivered by Inuit educators
  • Based on Inuit societal values, worldview, and beliefs

The education system should help young Inuit to stay in school longer. It should also help restore confidence that was lost during the residential school experience.
