How Do These Practices All Work Together?

These practices work together in unexpected ways.

The Early Learning Framework uses the image of ferns, with their underground rhizome systems, to think about these practices.

The rhizome image reminds us that pedagogy is complex, and that

• Learning may or may not happen in a predictable linear progression
• Learning can surprise us. It can create something new and unanticipated
• Learning may have no beginning or end
• Thinking and learning are always multiplying and presenting new ways of thinking and doing
• There are always new ways of learning that we cannot foresee
