Module 2: Rethinking Learning and Practice

Pedagogical Narration in Professional Practice

Engaging in Pedagogical Narration

Pedagogical narration is not a step-by-step process. Instead, each component is taken up again and again. As adults and children work with a pedagogical narration, they learn something new and grow in their thinking. Then new questions are formulated, and choices are made about what to do next.

Look at the diagram below. Note that each component is connected. Critical reflection and a pedagogy of listening are central and flow through each component.

The process of pedagogical narration is ongoing and cyclical. Through critical reflection and a pedagogy of listening, educators are able to engage in collaboartive dialogue, make pedagogical choices, collect traces, make those traces visible and create links to the Early Learning Framework.

Think about how this diagram shows the process of pedagogical narration. It shows how practice can be active, ongoing, and always bringing forth something new.
