Critical Reflection
As you think critically about early childhood and primary education, you can challenge accepted knowledge. You can explore different worldviews.
Through critical reflection you can
- Explore ideas about “how the world works”
- Where have these ideas come from?
- Who has generated these ideas?
- Who benefits from these ideas?
- Who have these ideas excluded or neglected?
- Seek many perspectives on common beliefs about teaching and learning
- Reflect on the ways that some people have been marginalized and silenced
- Rethink what you can do, who you can be, and explore different ways of understanding
- Think about possible issues, like racism of low expectations. How would this affect your practice?
- Celebrate and honour diversity in your practice

Expanding an Idea
Within the B.C. public education system, a form of racism has occurred called the racism of low expectations—educators with low expectations for Indigenous students based on biases stemming from social attitudes (BC Auditor General’s report, 2015).
To deal with this racism, you may encounter difficult discussions. However, these discussions also give you the oppportunity to make sure that all children have the best possible chance to fulfill their highest potential.
