Black Identity

Black diversity

Due to colonization, the transatlantic slave trade, and the imposition of harmful stereotypes, many Black people have a shared experience. This does not mean that their identity is all the same (monolithic).

The terms race, nationality and ethnicity are often used incorrectly and interchangeably to describe oneself or a group of people. From the section on Black Joy, we know that race is a social construction.

Nationality

Nationality is legal membership to a nation state.

Ethnicity

Ethnicity includes shared cultural traits, language and ancestry.

Race

Race is a historically, socially, legally, and physically constructed concept made by humans to justify the oppression of one group by others.

Culture

Culture includes the shared beliefs, values and practices of a group.
