Apply the Selection Criteria
Social Considerations
When selecting a resource for your grade level and classroom, it’s important to identify elements in the resource that might require your further attention prior to its use with students. Here are 13 areas that are used by Focused ED in its evaluation process.

Consider whether themes or references to sexuality, violence, racism, sexism, strong language, etc., impact the educational value of a resource. Are the references gratuitous or integral? Is this the best resource for teaching the content and theme? What additional resources will you consider to bring balance to a topic?
Viewing resources through a social consideration lens can enable you to choose resources thoughtfully and to plan and prepare for instruction. This may include providing your students with context, engaging them in critical thinking and discussions, and preparing teaching strategies accordingly. And in some instances, considering when and how you might share information with parents on upcoming themes and resources so that they are aware and able to discuss at home.
Not every resource will address each social consideration, but over the school year, be mindful to select a range of resources that will represent the diverse experiences and perspectives of your students and the broader community.
