About the Course

Learning to be Anti-Racist: An Introductory Course is:

  • Part of the B.C. Ministry of Education and Child Care’s K-12 Anti-Racism Action Plan.
  • A foundational anti-racism professional training tool available to all district/school employees and B.C.’s education sector.
  • Designed to support professional learning about anti-racism in B.C. schools and school districts.
  • NOT a curriculum document.
  • NOT part of the K-12 Provincial curriculum.
  • NOT designed for classroom use with students.

The intended audience for Learning to be Anti-Racist: An Introductory Course is:

  • All employees working in B.C. schools and school districts, as well as the broader education sector within B.C.

Learning to be Anti-Racist: An Introductory Course includes seven modules (30-60 minutes each) that address topics such as:

  • General information on racism and anti-racism in relation to human rights.
  • Introductory information on anti-Indigenous racism and its historical, social, and contemporary impacts within the education system.
  • Descriptions about how racism operates in the education system.
  • Considerations for better understanding bias, identity, and privilege.
  • Information on stereotypes, microaggressions, and hate crimes.
  • Considerations for interrupting racism and responding to racists incidents.
  • Reflective questions and ideas about actions that can be taken to confront racism and strengthen anti-racist behaviours in B.C.’s education system.

Learning to be Anti-Racist: An Introductory Course is designed to:

  • Support employees within B.C.’s education system to build strong knowledge and skills focused on identifying and addressing racism in schools, school districts, and school communities.
  • Help ensure all members of B.C.’s school communities, including students, family members, and staff, feel safe, and valued.
  • Strengthen anti-racism change in all areas of the education system.

Learning to be Anti-Racist: An Introductory Course will be implemented and supported by:

  • Leaders of anti-racism change within B.C. districts and schools; based on the unique learning contexts and professional training needs of their employees and teams.
  • Leaders of B.C.’s provincial education partner groups and the broader education system.

Learning to be Anti-Racist: An Introductory Course was created through significant input, consultation, conversations, and feedback provided by:

  • B.C. education leaders of anti-racism change.
  • Members of provincial education partner groups.
  • Representatives from across B.C.’s provincial ministries.
